The XDG Basedirectory specification proposes default homedir folders for the categories DATA (~/.local/share), CONFIG (~/.config) and CACHE (~/.cache). One category however is missing: STATE. This category has been requested several times but nothing happened.
Examples for state data are:

• history files of shells, repls, anything that uses libreadline
• logfiles
• state of application windows on exit
• recently opened files
• last time application was run
• emacs: bookmarks, ido last directories, backups, auto-save files, auto-save-list

The missing STATE category is especially annoying if you're managing your dotfiles with a VCS (e.g. via VCSH) and you care to keep your homedir tidy.
If you're as annoyed as me about the missing STATE category, please voice your opinion on the XDG mailing list.
Of course it's a very long way until applications really use such a STATE directory. But without a common standard it will never happen.

I'm working in a very small web agency with 4 employees, one of them part time and our boss who doesn't do programming. It shouldn't come as a surprise, that our development infrastructure is not perfect. We have many ideas and dreams how we could improve it, but not the time.
Now we have two obvious choices: Either we just do nothing or we buy services from specialized vendors like github, atlassian, travis-ci, heroku, google and others.
Doing nothing does not work for me. But just buying all this stuff doesn't please me either. We'd depend on proprietary software, lock-in effects or one-size-fits-all offerings.

My new employer sponsors me a phone of my choice (up to a certain cost) and I'm very inclined to order a FairPhone. I want to support them and I like to have a device that'd be easily hackable and allows me to run Debian on it.
But it'd be my first smartphone and I don't really know much about android phones. What do you think about the specs of the Fairphone? Do you think it'd be easy to run a free environment (Debian) on it?

Am Montag fängt in Baden-Württemberg die Schule wieder an und damit für mich ein neuer Lebensabschnitt als Lehrer für Physik und Informatik an der Freien Waldorfschule Wahlwies. Vor den Ferien hatte ich bereits eine zweiwöchige Epoche zur Kernphysik unterrichtet und zumindest mir hat es viel Freude bereitet. Jetzt bin ich besonders gespannt auf meine ersten Unterrichtserfahrungen in Informatik. Ich genieße den besonderen Luxus, dass der bisherige Physik- und Informatiklehrer bis zu seiner Rente auch noch ein Jahr an der Schule ist und mir sehr beim Einstieg hilft.

Jetzt endet auch meine Zeit des "Funemployment" seit Februar 2011 als ich meine Stelle als Softwareentwickler gekündigt habe. Zur Beruhigung aller Anhänger der alten Erwersarbeitsideologie sei erwähnt das ich in dieser Zeit u.a. für mein Informatikstudium die Bachelorarbeit geschrieben, 2 Praktika absolviert und 3 Prüfungen gut oder sehr gut abgelegt habe.

Meiner lieben Frau Ioana muss ich natürlich vielmals dafür danken, dass ich einen kleinen Teil unserer Rücklagen aufbrauchen durfte während Sie täglich zur weisungsgebundenen, sozialversicherungspflichtigen vollzeitigen Erwerbsarbeit ging. Ich glaube aber weiterhin, dass das Geld so deutlich besser investiert ist als in einer Altersvorsorge am Kapitalmarkt.

In den Ferien hatten wir vier mal Gäste in unserer Wohnung: Ein junges moldawisch-russisches Pärchen aus Finnland war mit den Fahrrädern unterwegs, eine Italienerin kam für einen ägyptischen Tanzkurs nach Konstanz, meine Eltern kamen zu meinem Geburtstag um meinen Lieblingskuchen zu backen und endlich besuchte uns auch Ioanas Schwester Gina mit ihrer Familie. Hoffentlich kommt
bald auch unser kleiner (8 Monate alter) Neffe Jonas mit seinen Eltern zu Besuch!

Als eine der letzten Ferienaktivitäten fange ich nun an, mein Facebookkonto zu löschen und alle Kontaktdaten dort heraus zu kopieren. An größeren Aktionen steht dann am Samstag, 29.9. der bundesweite Aktionstag "UmFAIRTeilen" zur Wiedereinführung der Vermögensteuer und einer einmaligen Vermögensabgabe an. Dazu wollen wir mit ATTAC auch in Konstanz aktiv werden.

Zum Thema Schule zum Abschluß ein Spruch des Astrophysikers Neil deGrasse Tyson:

update: Inzwischen war bereits der erste Schultag. Um halb neun trafen sich alle Schüler ab der 9. Klasse in der Turnhalle. Es gab Musik, eine Ansprache und die neuen Lehrer wurden mit Blumen begrüßt und durften sich kurz vorstellen. Danach mussten wir schnell rüber zur Unterstufe, der wir uns wieder vorstellten und wo wir wieder Blumen bekamen.
